These are semi common in areas with a high density of whole foods markets.  Neat idea really.  Very high carrying capacity for the weight and makes for living in urban areas without a car much more viable.  They certainly could have tried a little harder to lock it up though, they were SO close, yet so far away.

Cargo bikes are pretty cool.

I wouldn’t lock it up that way, but it is probably heavy enough that it’s low risk that anyone’s going to drag it off. If you left it there all the time, it would probably go badly, but for a short stop the danger seems low.

That is an impressive piece of hardware. It’s an electric Xtracycle. The company got their start with the Free Radical kit, essentially a subframe which attaches to a standard frame, extending the length of the frame and providing mounting points for additional hardware.

Kinja'd!!!

The best part is that it’s all removable. If you decide to upgrade, you can use your Free Radical on your next frame.

Some people took it a step further and added a Stoke Monkey kit to provide electric power.

The next logical step was to build a complete frame with built-in electric power. That’s what you found!

From the looks of it, the poor thing could use a good set of fenders.

Is that a battery assist? With that much bicycle, it doesn’t look like very much battery.

It looks like it’s rigged to put a couple of kids on toboggan style.

The yellow bike above looks cobbled together and before I read your comment, I though you were posting it as something absurd. I was surprised to learn that a battery cell in the seat post of a racing bicycle could actually make a difference but if everyone is at champion level, you win or lose by hairs’ breadths, so why not?

yes, its an e-bike. You don’t need a ton of battery for the assist, remember that peak athletes only churn out 450 watts to the pedals and only for 45 minutes at a time. 100 watt assist would go a long way and at 36 volts that’ s about 2.66 amps which would get you several hours of continuous use with a standard 14 Ahr battery.

Xtracycle rocks . I had one with a 72v 40a electric hub motor, 45mph. Prefect for Center City Philly. I could zip faster than traffic and carry a passenger, generator, window air conditioner, basically anything. Here’s laundry day.

I’m sure that’s all straight linear arithmetic, but I’m going to take your word for it and not check your maths. But this assumes using the battery as an assist, rather than a primary locomotion, correct?

Xtracycle now sells a bike with the extension built in (blue bike) . The electric Bosch(?) kit is sold as an option directly from Xtracycle.

yeah, its assist, but assuming the motor is powerful enough and the battery can dish out the current it could easily supply enough solo motivation. the amp draw is 2.77 amps, not 2.66. derp.

It does look somewhat absurd. That’s one of the reasons companies started making dedicated frames with the extra length and the receivers for the extracycle accessories.

That stoke monkey is surprisingly powerful. It operates through the crank and, unlike other electric systems, it requires the rider to pedal. One reviewer said riding the test bike up hills with 100 lbs of her  kids onboard was almost effortless.
